Rock & Pop Geni

I rolled a 5 landed on a "duel"-square and must now go into a duel with one of the other players. I chose to duel James, he has not done so good in this game. We pick up a question card each and he who is the first to give a wrong answer is out...

More info

In Rock & Pop Geni (Rock & Pop Genius) the players are going to check out their music knowledge. They will try to be the first player to reach the goal square but to get there they will need to give correct answers to questions of the following topics: Norwegian artists/the 50's, the 60's, the 70's, the 80's and mixed questions.

Before you play

Before you start playing you sort all the question cards after topic, shuffle each deck and put them next to the game board. The 15 joker markers are placed on various squares on the game board. Each player picks up a playing piece and places it on START.

Playing the game

The game board is divided in 50 squares from start to goal. On each square there is marked a symbol matching one of the five topics, except for the ten squares marked with duel. When it is a players turn he shall answer a question of the same topic as marked on the square he is standing on. On each question card there are three questions and the player rolls the die to find out which of the three questions he shall answer. The player on the right of him picks up the question card on top of the deck and asks the question. If the player gives a correct answer he might roll the die (marked with numbers from 1 to 6) and move his playing piece. He will now get a new question from the topic marked on the square he landed on this time. If he answers correct he can roll the die and move again. The player continues until he gives a wrong answer. Then it is the next players turn.

Special squares

If a player lands on a square where there is a joker marker he gets a joker card. The player might save this card and use it when he gets a question of which he don't know the correct answer. When he plays the joker card he might chose one of these actions:
  • Give a new answer to the question
  • Get another question of the same topic

If a player lands on a duel square he is to challenge one of the other players. Both the challenged and the challenger choses a topic of their choice and then draws a card corresponding to the other players topic. They ask the other player questions, starting with question number one on the card, the proceeding to number two and then number three. They will pick up new cards if neccessery. The duel continues until one player gives a wrong answer and the other one a correct one (joker cards may not be used during a duel). If the challenger wins the duel he will move on as if he'd answered correct on a normal square. If the challenged player wins the duel he gets to roll the die once and move his playing piece but he may not answer a question, the turn is going back to the player sitting to the left of challenger.

On the five last squares on the game board you don't get to roll the die on a correct answer, you just get to move one square ahead. This will ensure that the winner will have answered correct at least one question of each topic.

Winning the game

He who gives a correct answer while standing on the last square is declared winner.

Rock & Pop Geni is an OK game but you should have above average knowledge in pop & rock music to do well in this game. Personally i prefer trivia games with questions of general knowledge like Trivial Pursuit or standard Geni.

Variants

If you want a more difficult game you might remove some or all of the joker markers. If there is a huge gap of music knowledge between the players you might want to give some players a few joker cards for free at the start of the game. If you want the game to last longer you might use the die numbered 1 to 3 when rolling for movement instead of the normal die with number 1 to 6. You might also want to play the game as teams against other teams instead of single players against single players.

Examples of questions

  • Mixed Questions: Which group is known for "Emma" and "You sexy thing"?
  • Norwegian Artists: Who started his career in "The Young Norwegians"?
  • The 60's: Which park did "the Small Faces" sing about?
  • The 70's: Which group sang "Living next door to Alice"?
  • The 80's: Which group has a one-armed drummer?
