Manhattan

On Manhattan, New York, and in several other big cities in the world, companies are building huge skyscrapers. The players try to build as many skyscrapers as possible on Manhattan, in Kairo, San Paulo, Frankfurt, Sydney and Hong Kong. The big question is: Are you going to secure your own buildings or try to take over one of your opponents'? That's up to each player to decide, but one thing is certain: No one will sit still and just look at how buildings they have used time and energy to build, are taken over by another player!

More info

Manhattan has a couple of simple, almost genius, mechanics, that drive the game forward, and does so without any downtime.

The players start the game with 24 building pieces of various heights that they use to build skyscrapers with. The game lasts four rounds, so the players have six pieces each round. To build you need to play a suitable card (you have four cards on hand). The cards show one of the nine squares in each of the six cities on the game board. As long as nothing has been built on the square you can just go ahead and do so. If, however, someone has already built on the square, you can still build, but you need to build a least as many stories as the building already consists of (i.e if it s a 3 story building you have to raise it with at least 3 new stories making the building at least 6 stories tall). After each round scoring takes places (so there are four scoring phases throughout the game). During the scoring phase, the players with the topmost story in each building owns it. Points are scored for the player who has a majority of the buildings in each city and for the player who has the tallest building on the board.

Evaluation

Manhattan is a very good strategy game suitable for both "casual" and "hardcore" gamers. The game has a short playing time, the players have a lot of choices throughout the game and it is one of the prettiest games to look at, especially after the third round were the skyscrapers makes a nice 3D-effect on the board. A beautiful, original and exciting game that got a well deserved "Spiel des Jahres" (Game of the Year) award in 1994.

Charlotte Dymarkowski:
I can't get the page for the English rules for Manhattan to open. Could you check the link and/or send the directions to the above email? We played this game a long time ago with a friend of ours from Germany and loved it so much that he bought us one. But...the directions are in German and I can't remember how to play. Thanks!!
Sandi:
Where can I buy this game?
