Jumbo Jet

Let's see, my turn. I'm on my way to Delhi. Hope I don't land on any airports in Africa, because now that Peter owns all three airports the landing fee is extremely high!

More info

Jumbo Jet is another Monopoly variant, but this time with a twist. Each player controls an airline, and by getting the best routes and airports they try to end the game as the richest player.

Each player gets an airline, player tokens and 250.000. The player moves on the outer edge of the board, and the squares shows different airports, ie. Budapest, Athen and Nairobi. The airports are grouped together in groups of two, three or four airports. For instance you'll find three airports grouped together in Africa (Tunis, Nairobi and Johannesburg) and four in the Orient (Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore and Djakarta).

Game play

A player starts by drawing a booking ticket. This shows to which airport the player shall move. Movement is done by rolling dice like in Monopoly. When the player arrives at his destination, he returns to Start and now he can chose whether to get paid for the flight (the amount is printed on the booking ticket) or get the "route right" to the airport. The owner of a route right can demand payment of the route for any other player landing on this airport. The amount is higher the more route rights the owner has in this route area (ie country or continent. Example: The orient route consists of four airports. If a player owns one route right here the other players must pay him 20.000 when landing on this airport. If he owns two route rights here they must pay 40.000, 80.000 for three route rights and finally 160.000 if he owns all four route rights (airports) in the Orient. It is therefor important to collect as many route rights (airports) as possible in one route area (country or continent).

A player can never own more than eight landing rights at the same time, but the players can trade, sell and buy landing rights them between themselves. They can also be sold to the bank.

Special spaces on the board

Some of the spaces a special function:
  • Red spaces: Draw a chance card
  • Cloud: Miss one turn because of fog
  • Yellow space with petrol tube: Fuel up and pay one, two or three thousand times the number thrown
  • One dice: Throw again but with one dice only

Examples of chance cards:

  • New office in Paris. Pay 25.000
  • Commision fee to travel agencies. Pay 5.000 for each of your landing right
  • You get paid 20.000 from your insurance

The winner

When a players is out of money, his airline is bankrupt and this player is out of the game. The player who is left when all others are bankrupt is the winner. You can also play to a particular time limit, and whoever has the most possesions (money, route rights and booking tickets) is the winner.

Dissapoints...

Jumbo Jet is a rather old game (© 1976), but I haven't played it much. The game came in a huge box with a large playing board and many great bits and pieces. This created a lot of expectations that the game never managed to live up to. The game gets too repeating and tedious, and ends up as only one of too many Monopoly clones.
