Let's see, I have now discovered that Peter is my partner, Agent X, and that our mission is to capture Lord Fiddlebottom, played by Eric. But what disguise is he using? The tall? The thick? Or the thin?

More info

In Inkognito the players take role as one of four agents, Agent X, Madame Zsa Zsa, Lord Fiddlebottom or Colonel Bubble. They have all come to the carnival in Venezia where they hope to accomplish their secret missions. Two and two players play together as a team, but when the game starts the players don't know who their partner is.

Before the game starts every player receives an envelope. In this envelope there are three cards: an identity card which tell which agent the player is, a disguise card which, tells what disguise he is using and a mission card, which, together with his partners mission card, tells what this team need to accomplish to win the game. These cards are kept hidden for the other players.

During the game the players move around in Venezia. First they need to find their partner. Then they must discover what mission they've got. Dependig on type of mission the may even need to find out the other team's identity and disguise. The mission may be to arrive at a specific location in Venezia, to capture one of the other agents or to escape from Venezia. The first team to accomplish their mission wins the game.

To discover another players identity you need to land on the same square as him. When you do this he must show you three cards, for example two identity cards and one disguise card. One of this must be true (i.e. the identity or disguise he actually has, the other two cards are false). After a while, when you've seen several cards from the different players , you will learn the players true identity and disguise.

Highly recommended!

This is a real fun game, but it is difficult to describe it proper. I won't get into all details, like for example the ambassador, who keeps valuable information the players can get, or the fact that it is a figure called Mene-Tekel, not dice-throwing, that decides where you might move. The game reminds of Clue (Cluedo), but this one is much better. It has a good atmosphere and it is unusual in the way that you can't win on your own. If you know everything about the other team's identity and disguise this won't help you, because you will need your partners information to accomplish the mission.

Although the game states that it can be played by three players, I would not reccommend this. You need to be four players or the game gets too unbalanced.

Inkognito received the special price "SCHÖNES SPIEL" under Spiel des Jahre 1988.

Ø.Eker:
Merkelig at Cluedo selges og ikke Inkognito. Cluedo blir parkert. En genial vri. Det er deilig å ergre seg over medspilleren som ikke skjønner oppdraget.
A. Karttunen:
This game reminds me of the old Alga-game I remember playing in my early teens (in the beginning of 1980's that is). It was sold with the name "Taistelu" (= a battle) in Finland, and it was a chess-like deterministic battle board game, except that the pieces were various officers from 1700 or 1800-century army, plus also "a spy" and "a cannon", illustrated on the upright cardboard pieces, and these were set in the beginning of the game to one's own beginning ranks of the board in any order one liked so that the back side was towards the opponent (so that the initial situation of the opponent stayed secret to both players), and then players started moving their pieces (in pawn like fashion I recollect), and not until two enemy pieces stood to each other did they reveal their values, with the higher officer usually winning, but with some nice non-transitive quirks, like that a cannon killed everybody, and so on.

Does anybody have more information about this game?
Trond Braut:
The game you are thinking about is Stratego. It is still being published by Jumbo Spiele.
