Coco Crazy

Let's see, my turn to roll the die. I rolled a question mark, which means that I have the possibility of getting the green monkey I need to win the game. Hmm, I wonder which coconut contains the green monkeys....

More info

Coco Crazy is a fun family game in which the player's memory, perception and reaction is important. Before the game starts the monkeys are grouped together by color and placed in a coconut (the yellow monkeys in one coconut, the green in another and so forth). The coconuts are closed, mixed, and placed randomly on the board, so that no player know which coconut contains which type of monkeys.

Course of the game

When it is a player's turn he rolls the die and then (depending on the result) performs an action. Some actions are only for the active player, others are for all players, done simultaneously. The different actions are:
  • Eyes: When this symbol is rolled each player simultaneously grabs a coconut and looks inside it. (As there are only 6 coconuts, this leads to chaos when 7 or 8 players are involved.) The players then returns the coconuts to the board.
  • The arrow: When the arrow is rolled each player simultaneously switch places on two of the coconuts. This usually brings a lot of confusion on the players.
  • Gameboard and arrow: The active player rotates the board 90 degrees.
  • Question mark: The active player says out loud one of the colors. He then picks one of the coconuts and looks into it. If it contains monkeys of the correct color he gets one of the monkeys, if not, he closes the coconut and puts it back on the board.
  • Monkey face: The active player can chose one of three actions:
    1. Switch places on two of the coconuts
    2. Look into a coconut of his choice
    3. Guess the color of the monkeys in one of the coconuts (same as rolling a question mark)

Winning the game

As soon as one player has collected 6 monkeys of different color, the game ends, and this player is declared the winner. With 7 or 8 players you need only 5 different monkeys to win.

Evaluation

Coco Crazy is an entertaining game. You need to be consentrated and stay focused all the time, or else you'll lose control and fail to remember in which coconuts the different monkeys are. The production standard is also very good, as we are used to from Ravensburger. The rules booklet is very good, printed in colors with many illustrations that helps learning the game quick. Coco Crazy has been elected "Family game of the Year" in both Denmark and Holland in 1992, and the rule booklet got a price for "Best rules" in Essen 1992.

In many boardgames, players roll dice to determine who's starting, but in Coco Crazy the rules state that the player who most resembles a monkey is starting...

I don't see that it's any problem to adapt this game, language wise. There's really no language to it! My children play with children who don't speak their language and they manage fine. Just print the English directions found on this page for those who speak English.
